Integrating Smart Thermostats for Water-Based Floor Heating

Hello everyone! I hope you’re all having a fantastic start to 2024! :tada: I’m currently exploring options to upgrade my old wall thermostats with smart ones for my water-based floor heating system. With so many options available, I wanted to gather your insights on the best approaches for integration with Homey Pro.

My Setup:

  • I’ve recently replaced my TP-Link WiFi plugs due to frequent “rate limited” errors, which were frustrating. I now use IKEA Zigbee switches, which have been much more reliable.
  • I also have two Z-Wave devices: 3-phase smart meters for tracking energy consumption of my house and heat pump.

Questions:

  1. Technology Choice: WiFi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave? Which is most reliable for thermostats in a Homey environment?
  2. Rate Limited Errors: Were these specific to TP-Link, or a common issue with WiFi devices?
  3. Zigbee vs. Z-Wave: Given my existing Zigbee mesh, is it better to stick with Zigbee for consistency, or consider Z-Wave for potential bandwidth advantages?

Why I’m Asking:

  • Stability is key for heating systems. I don’t want to deal with connectivity issues during cold snaps.
  • I want a seamless integration with Homey Pro for automation and monitoring.

Looking Forward:
I’m really excited to hear your experiences and recommendations! Whether it’s about specific devices, protocols, or integration tips, your insights will be invaluable. Let’s make 2024 the year of smart, reliable heating! :ocean::sparkles:

Best regards,
Kay
