Integrating Somfy Markise and Lighting into Home Assistant

Hi everyone, I recently completed a project to integrate my Somfy Markise and lighting system into Home Assistant, and I wanted to share my experience and findings with the community. This was my first foray into smart home automation, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

The Setup

I have a Somfy Markise and a set of lights in my terrace area. Previously, these were controlled using a Somfy remote with two channels. My goal was to eliminate the need for the remote and instead control everything via an app or voice commands (Alexa). Additionally, I wanted to set up an automation feature where the Markise and lights would retract if the weather station detected strong winds (though I haven’t installed the weather station yet, I’m excited to add that later!).

The Solution

After some research, I discovered that I needed a Somfy Connectivity Kit to interface with my existing Somfy motors and lights. This kit allows me to connect the Markise and lights to my network, making them accessible via Home Assistant. I followed the steps to teach the kit to recognize my devices using the existing remote, which was straightforward.

Next, I integrated Somfy into Home Assistant using the Overkiz integration. This process was smooth, and within a few minutes, I had full control over the Markise and lights through the Home Assistant interface. The ability to control everything via the app is fantastic, and setting up voice commands with Alexa was a breeze.

Automation Possibilities

While I haven’t implemented the weather-based automation yet, I’m looking forward to adding it once I get my weather station. The potential to automate the Markise and lights based on weather conditions is exciting and adds another layer of convenience to my setup.

Cost Considerations

I explored whether there were more cost-effective alternatives, but the Somfy solution seemed like the most reliable and straightforward option. It was worth the investment, especially considering the seamless integration with Home Assistant and the ease of use.

Final Thoughts

This project has been incredibly rewarding. Not only did it eliminate the need for a physical remote, but it also introduced me to the world of smart home automation. I’m now inspired to tackle more projects and further integrate my home systems. I’m grateful to the Home Assistant community for providing such comprehensive documentation and support.
