Integrating Traditional and Smart Security Systems: A Successful Journey

As someone who values both reliability and modern convenience, I’ve always been curious about integrating my old-school security system with my new SmartThings setup. After some research and trial and error, I managed to create a seamless connection between the two, and I’m excited to share my experience!First, I freed up a zone on my hardwired system by connecting two zones in series. This allowed me to use one zone for the SmartThings integration. I then set up a device handler for the Mimolite, which acted as the bridge between the old and new systems. Pairing Mimolite with SmartThings was straightforward, and it opened up a world of possibilities.I created a security rule in SmartThings to trigger the Mimolite switch when motion sensors detected activity. This, in turn, sent an alarm signal to my hardwired system. On the flip side, I connected the hardwired system’s alarm to SmartThings, ensuring that any alarm triggered by the traditional system would notify me through the SmartThings app. This two-way communication was the key to making everything work seamlessly. One challenge I faced was measuring the voltage from the hardwired system to set the Mimolite’s analog triggers correctly. After some testing, I adjusted the parameters to fit the voltage range I observed. This step was crucial for ensuring reliable communication between the systems. The result? A fully integrated security setup that combines the reliability of my old system with the smart, app-controlled features of SmartThings. I can now monitor and control my entire security system from my phone, set up custom automations, and enjoy peace of mind knowing both systems are working in harmony. This project was a great learning experience, and it reinforced my belief in the potential of blending traditional and modern technology. If you’re considering a similar integration, I’d say go for it—it’s worth the effort! :rocket:
