Integrating Traditional Devices into a Modern Smart Home Setup

Hey everyone, I’ve been on a journey to integrate some traditional devices into my smart home setup, and I thought I’d share my experiences and some tips that might help others facing similar challenges. :rocket:

One of the key devices I wanted to integrate was my Gira Türsprechsystem, which controls the outdoor lighting. The system uses an Eltako relay, but I wanted to switch to Zigbee/Matter devices for better compatibility and flexibility. After some research, I found that using a device like the Fibaro FGMS001 was the perfect solution. It detects the impulse from the Schaltaktor and sends a signal to Home Assistant, which then controls the lights. This setup has been rock solid and has completely transformed how I manage outdoor lighting!

Another area I focused on was my thermostat setup. I upgraded from an old furnace to a new one with an inline humidifier. The wiring was a bit tricky at first, but I managed to get everything connected without needing a C wire by using a C wire adapter. It was a bit nerve-wracking stuffing that third wire into the C slot, but it worked perfectly! Now, I can control the humidity levels and heating from my phone, which is a huge convenience, especially during Colorado’s dry winters. :face_with_monocle:

For those looking to automate their lighting groups, I’ve found that using the group component in Home Assistant is a game-changer. By setting up rules based on the light names and areas, I can automatically add new lights to the correct groups. For example, any light with ‘Master Bedroom’ in its name automatically joins the ‘Bedroom Lights’ group. This has saved me so much time and effort in manually organizing everything. :star2:

I’d love to hear how others have tackled similar integration challenges or if there are other innovative ways to streamline smart home setups. Let’s keep the ideas flowing! :handshake:
