The Decision: Vera vs. NinjaBlocks vs. SmartThings
I started by comparing three platforms: Vera, NinjaBlocks, and SmartThings. While NinjaBlocks’ open-source approach and low cost were appealing, I was concerned about device support and community resources. SmartThings seemed robust but had reliability issues in areas with spotty internet. Vera, despite its clunky UI, offered a strong community and extensive device compatibility, which was a deal-breaker for me.

I went with the Vera Lite and paired it with:

- Aeotec Multi-Sensor for motion and door sensing
- Kwikset Tustin SmartCode Lever for secure door locks

- Heat activation based on outdoor temperature

Challenges and Solutions
