Integrating VeraPlus with Control4 and Wink Devices: My Experience and Tips

I just received my VeraPlus hub, and I’m super excited to integrate it with my existing Control4 and Wink systems! :tada: Let me share my journey and some tips I’ve picked up along the way.

My Setup

I’ve been using Control4 for about a year and a half, and it’s been a game-changer for my home entertainment. Recently, I switched dealers, and the system has become even more reliable. I also have Wink 1, 2, and SmartThings 2 (ST2) hubs. While ST2 is great for specific routines, like triggering actions with iPhones and key fobs, it doesn’t integrate well with Control4, which is a bit frustrating.

The VeraPlus Arrival

The VeraPlus is here, and I’m hoping it will bridge some gaps. My main focus is setting up presence sensors. With ST2, I loved how specific routines kicked in when my family members arrived home or left. It made life so much easier! However, the delay issues with Wink were a deal-breaker—15 seconds for Hub 1 and 30 seconds for Hub 2 was just too slow for reliable automation.

VeraPlus Integration Questions

Here’s what I’m curious about:

  • Presence Sensors: What do I use for presence detection with VeraPlus? I need something as seamless as ST2’s setup.
  • Bulb Compatibility: I have three Hue bulbs and the updated hub. Do I still need the Hue hub, or can they work directly with VeraPlus?
  • Homebridge with Vera: I’ve heard great things about Homebridge. How does it integrate with Vera? Any tips or gotchas?

Tips from My Experience

  1. Automation with Presence Detection: Setting up routines based on presence has been a lifesaver. It’s amazing how it can turn lights on, adjust thermostats, or even start music as you walk in the door.
  2. Z-Wave Switches: If you’re using Z-Wave switches, make sure to test the latency. A 15-second delay might seem minor, but it can really throw off your automation flow.
  3. Control4 Integration: If the Vera driver in Control4 works well, it could be the missing link for a seamless smart home experience. I’m hopeful!
