Hey everyone, I’m excited to share my journey with integrating my Wyze camera with a TP-Link Kasa smart switch for night motion detection. As a newbie to this smart home ecosystem, I’ve been exploring how to automate my home security without breaking the bank.
Here’s my setup: I have a Wyze outdoor camera monitoring my backyard and a TP-Link Kasa smart switch controlling my porch light. My goal was to have the porch light turn on for 3 minutes whenever the camera detects motion at night. Sounds simple enough, right?
I started by checking out IFTTT, thinking it might be the easiest way to connect these devices. Unfortunately, I ran into some roadblocks. The Wyze camera integration wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped, and the TP-Link switch required some specific app setup that I wasn’t entirely comfortable with.
After some research, I stumbled upon the Hubitat community, and wow, the possibilities here are incredible! I decided to give it a shot. I installed the Wyze camera driver and the TP-Link Kasa switch driver, both of which were surprisingly user-friendly.
The next step was creating a rule. I wanted the rule to trigger only at night, so I set the time frame from sunset to sunrise. Then, I configured the rule to activate the TP-Link switch for exactly 3 minutes whenever motion was detected.
The best part? It worked on the first try! Now, whenever someone walks by my backyard at night, the porch light illuminates just enough to deter any unwanted visitors, and it turns off automatically after 3 minutes to save energy.
This experience has been a great learning curve for me. It taught me the importance of community support and the versatility of Hubitat in handling different devices and scenarios. I’m now inspired to explore more automation ideas around my home.
If anyone else is looking to set up something similar, feel free to reach out! I’d be happy to share more details or troubleshoot any issues you might encounter. Happy automating!
