Integration Experience with Shelly EM and Vaillant Boiler

Hello everyone! I wanted to share my recent experience integrating a Shelly EM sensor and a Vaillant boiler into my Home Assistant setup. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I hope my insights can help others who might be exploring similar integrations.

First, let me talk about the Shelly EM. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now, and it’s been a reliable tool for monitoring my home’s energy consumption. However, things got a bit tricky when I added a PV system to the mix. Initially, the energy readings from the Shelly EM and the grid meter didn’t align. After some research, I realized that the Shelly EM’s ‘+Total Energy’ setting was capturing energy in both directions—both consumption and generation. To get an accurate picture of my home’s net consumption, I had to subtract the exported energy from the total. This adjustment made everything line up perfectly with my grid meter readings!

Now, onto the Vaillant boiler. I’ve been eyeing this model for a while, especially since it uses eBus communication, which I understand is different from the more common OpenTherm. I wanted to ensure that my Tado system could still manage the boiler’s modulation effectively. After some digging, I found that Tado offers an add-on wireless receiver specifically designed for boilers like the Vaillant. Installing this receiver allowed my Tado system to communicate seamlessly with the boiler, giving me the precise temperature control I was hoping for.

One thing I’d like to mention is the importance of proper configuration. For the Shelly EM, I had to reset it a few times and tweak the channel settings to eliminate any ‘phantom’ devices that were showing up. I also renamed some channels to keep things organized. For the Vaillant boiler, ensuring that the Tado receiver was correctly paired with the boiler was crucial. I recommend checking the manufacturer’s guidelines and the Home Assistant documentation for step-by-step instructions.

I’d love to hear from others who have integrated these devices or similar setups. What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them? Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading, and happy integrating! :rocket:
