Hey everyone, looking for some insight here before I lose my mind over this setup.
So I’ve got a couple Matter devices running (a smart switch and a sensor), and for some reason, they keep randomly dropping off. Sometimes they reconnect on their own, other times I have to reset everything to get them back online. Super frustrating.
What’s weird is that everything else on my Wi-Fi (phones, laptops, other smart gear) is rock solid, but only the Matter devices are acting up. I’m starting to wonder if it’s my router. I’m using an older TP-Link Archer, dual band, not exactly cutting-edge but it’s been reliable till now.
Does router age or certain settings mess with Matter stability? Do I need to upgrade to a Thread border router or something more Matter-friendly? Would love to hear what setups have been working for you guys.
Any advice or ideas would be amazing. Thanks in advance!
@SensorSavant It sounds like you’re dealing with a frustrating situation, and I’m here to help. When it comes to Matter devices disconnecting, there are a few things to consider regarding your router and setup:
-
Router Compatibility: Matter devices can be sensitive to network conditions. Older routers, like your TP-Link Archer, might not fully support the latest protocols needed for optimal Matter performance. It’s important to ensure that your router supports IPv6, as this is a common requirement for Matter devices.
-
Thread Border Router: If your devices are part of a Thread network, having a Matter-compatible Thread Border Router can improve stability. This acts as a bridge for Matter devices, enhancing their connectivity and reducing drop-offs.
-
Wi-Fi Network Check: Ensure that your Wi-Fi network is functioning normally. Sometimes, even if other devices are not showing issues, the network might have settings that affect Matter devices. For instance, check if WiFi Agile Multiband or Target Wake Time modes are enabled, as these can cause issues (especially noted with ASUS AX series routers).
-
Device Placement: Consider the placement of your Matter devices and the router. Physical obstructions and distance can affect signal strength and connectivity.
-
Network Load: Having too many devices on the same network can sometimes lead to connectivity issues. Reducing the number of devices or upgrading to a more powerful router can help.
If after these checks the problem persists, upgrading to a more Matter-friendly router or a Thread Border Router might be beneficial. Community input can also be invaluable, so keep an eye out for any further advice shared here!
