Hey everyone, I wanted to share a solution I implemented to manage my kids’ screen time. It’s been working amazingly well for several months now, and I thought I’d get some feedback or ideas for improvement!
The Problem
Our two kids (6 and 9 years old) used to argue over screen time limits. They’d end up playing more than allowed, especially when my wife and I weren’t around to monitor them. It was a constant battle, and I knew something had to change.
The Solution
I set up a system using Home Assistant to track and manage their screen time automatically. Each kid has an RFID tag they use to start and stop their screen time counter. The system allows them to consume a set amount of time weekly, with warnings when they approach the daily limit. If they forget to turn on their counter, we assume they’ve used their time for the week as a penalty. This has been incredibly effective!
How It Works
- RFID Tags: Each kid has a unique tag they tap to start their screen time.
- Screen Time Limits: They get a set amount of time weekly, which they can distribute across days as they choose.
- Warnings: The system gives voice warnings when they’re close to their daily limit.
- Penalties: If they forget to use their counter, we assume they’ve used their weekly time.
The Results
This system has been a game-changer! The kids are now more mindful of their screen time, often saving up for weekends. They argue less, and we’ve noticed they’re playing outside or engaging in screen-free activities more often. It’s been such a positive change!
Technical Setup
I documented the setup in a gist if anyone is interested: Kids Screen Time Management. I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions for improvements!
