Leviton VRCZ4-MRX Zone Controllers vs Scene Controllers: A User's Experience

After finally installing my Leviton VRCZ4-MRX four-zone controller with a switch, I must say the process was surprisingly smooth—it worked on the first try! I had been a bit hesitant due to some trouble reports I’d read about zone controllers, but my experience was almost flawless. The zone controllers function exactly like the scene controllers, which is great for consistency. For instance, button 3 on my kitchen scene controller operates the same “Living room lights on” scene as button 1 on the Living Room zone controller, creating a highly functional three-way switch setup.

I do prefer the rocker switches and larger LEDs on the zone controllers compared to the momentary contact switches and smaller LEDs of the scene controllers. It’s a subtle difference, but one that makes a noticeable impact. However, there’s one minor issue I’ve encountered: the dimming function can be a bit finicky. If I wait too long after turning on a scene before adjusting the dimmer, it doesn’t respond. But if I time it just right, it works perfectly.

To improve future versions, I’d love to see a built-in dimmer instead of the integrated switch and a way to select an already operating scene to control with the dimmer. Currently, I have to turn off the scene, restart it, and then dim, which is a bit inconvenient. Despite these minor drawbacks, I’m very happy with the performance of these controllers. They’ve added a lot of functionality to my home setup, and I’d definitely recommend them to others looking to enhance their smart home experience.
