Summary
In the Aqara Home app I can create a light group that contains third-party Matter lights — the picker lists them and lets me select them, and the group is saved. But the resulting group cannot be edited: its edit page won’t open properly, I can’t add or remove devices, and the group card can’t control the lights. Automations that reference the group still work.
This is not specific to one product. It happens with every third-party Matter light I have tried. Groups made only of Aqara Zigbee lights work perfectly.
Steps to reproduce
- Create a light group with Aqara Zigbee lights — works fine.
- Create a group containing a third-party Matter light (or add one to an existing group). The app lists it, lets me select it, and saves the group.
- Open that group’s edit page — it does not open / stays blank. Adding or removing devices is impossible, and the group card does not control the lights.
Expected
Either third-party Matter devices should not be selectable in the light group picker (or be shown greyed out with an explanation), or mixed Zigbee + Matter groups should be fully supported.
Actual
They are selectable, the group is saved, and afterwards the app can no longer read or edit that group. The only way out is deleting and recreating the group — which breaks every automation that references it.
Note
I understand that a light group is a real Zigbee group binding and that an IP-based Matter device cannot join Zigbee multicast, so the underlying limitation makes sense. The bug is that the device picker does not enforce it: it offers a selection that the app itself cannot handle afterwards. This is a validation problem in the selector, not a request for mixed-group support (that is already tracked in “[Request] Lights grouping for Matter devices”).
