Hey everyone, I’m reaching out to share my experience and seek some advice regarding location accuracy in Home Assistant. I’ve been using HA for years to automate various tasks around my home, and one of my favorite features has been the ability to track my family’s locations and trigger automations based on their presence. However, recently I’ve encountered some issues with newer devices that I’d love to get your thoughts on.
For years, I relied on the HA mobile app to report accurate locations for my family members. The setup was simple: each family member had the HA app installed, and I used the Google TTS integration to send notifications when someone entered or left specific zones. Everything worked perfectly until I upgraded my kids’ devices to newer models.
Here’s what I’m observing: my older devices, like my Galaxy Note 9 and Pixel 3, still report locations with high precision, often within a 10-meter radius. However, my daughter’s new iPhone 14 and son’s Galaxy A22 are struggling to maintain consistent accuracy. Sometimes the reported location is off by up to 100 meters, and in the middle of the night, the accuracy can jump to an incredible 1-mile radius! This inconsistency is affecting my automations, as they rely on precise location data to trigger actions like arming or disarming the security system.
I’ve checked the settings on all devices, and they’re consistent across the board. Location services are enabled, and the devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. To rule out device-specific issues, I compared the HA app’s performance with another app, Live360, which consistently provides accurate location data. This makes me believe the issue lies within the HA app itself rather than the devices or network configuration.
I’m curious if others have experienced similar issues with newer devices and if there are any workarounds or settings adjustments that can help improve location accuracy. Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help.
