Love triangles are always tricky - Aqara, Apple Home and Home Assistant

Love triangles are always tricky – or so they say. That’s exactly how the relationship between Aqara, Apple Home, and Home Assistant feels to me. And I’m still wondering how this “relationship” should be set up for the best results.

Step one is clear: I pair all my Aqara devices in the Aqara app. But then what? Should I connect the Aqara hubs to Apple Home via Matter, and then connect Apple Home to Home Assistant? Or is it better to connect the Aqara hubs via Matter directly to Home Assistant? Or should I connect the hubs to both Apple Home and Home Assistant?

Wouldn’t that lead to devices showing up twice?

What’s been your experience? Has anyone found the “golden setup” they can share? Thanks!

The way I do it is connect my Aqara devices to my Aqara Hub. Then connect the Aqara hub to Home Assistant via Matter. And then I expose whatever devices I want to HomeKit via Home Assistant.

I agree with @jedwards0087. As an alternative, if you have a homepod mini, you can make that your primary hub using Aqara as just a “bridge” (not sure the technical term) between the Aquara Zigbee products. The M3 shows up as a hub in Homekit, but you interact directly with the Aqara products via Home Assistant. Also, note that a homepod mini is also matter compatible and can be used as your primary matter hub as well.
