Loving my setup, but Matter codes on bulbs are a nightmare!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to share my current setup and see if anyone else has this same gripe.

Right now I’m running the G4 doorbell/camera, a smart lock, a hub, and a bunch of GU10 bulbs.

Overall, I absolutely love the Zigbee side of things—it’s super reliable. But my biggest complaint is the Matter integration.

If you forget to save the Matter code before installing the bulbs, you literally have to dig them all out of the fixtures just to read the code again. It’s such a pain!

Does anyone else hate this? How do you guys keep track of your Matter codes so you don’t have to unscrew everything?

Since you are holding your phone most of the time while installing a device take a picture of the code then when you are done add it to an app of your choice to keep organized in the event you need it later.

An example of an app would be HomePass

Matter codes in general are a terrible idea, hopefully one day the NFC stuff will get rid of them completely.

The label on my FP300 wore off with very little handling, so now i’ve got to keep the sticker on the booklet under lock and key or else the device becomes instant E-waste the second it needs reconnecting.

Yeah, have sn extra app for matter codes,

Really just don’t see the idea in it. I love the ZigBee though

Anyone with hundreds of codes over years of installs/reinstalls might point out it’s helpful. You can export the codes in about any format you like.

Saving hundreds of device boxes or manuals just does not cut the mustard.

There is no reason to reinvent the wheel, just organize it.

I’m trying to wake you up from the nightmare you mentioned in the Thread Title,

It’s not that the app for the codes was not a great idea

I just mean the matter codes in general, I think it’s the wrong approach to make it more secure.

Once I pair something, I write the device location on the little booklet and put it in a drawer with all the rest of the little booklets.

It’s a problem for future me.

The Aqara app appears to be able to read a QR from my camera roll… The feature exists, anyway. Not got that to work as close focus of tiny QR code is poor on my older phone.

I still have a flatbed scanner, somewhere.
