Hello everyone! I wanted to share my experience with tracking water meters in Home Assistant. While I was looking for an automated solution, I realized that a manual approach could be just as effective and much simpler. Here’s how I set it up:
Every week, I receive a notification on my smartphone reminding me to read the water meter. This gentle nudge ensures I don’t forget to keep track. Once I note down the reading, I enter it into Home Assistant. The process is quick and straightforward, making it easy to maintain consistency.
The entered values are treated as normal sensor data, allowing me to display them on my UI and use them in queries and reports within Grafana. This setup not only helps me monitor my water usage but also integrates seamlessly with my existing smart home ecosystem.
I wrote a detailed blog post about this solution, explaining the step-by-step process and the benefits of using manual inputs in Home Assistant. If you’re interested, you can check it out here.
This method might not be fully automated, but it’s a practical example of how manual inputs can enhance your smart home experience. I hope this helps someone looking for a simple and effective way to track their water usage!
Best regards,
Sven
