I’ve recently made the switch to a Matter over Thread setup, and wow, the difference is night and day! 
Let me share how I set it up and what I’ve experienced so far.
Setup Overview:
- Network Layer: I’m using an eero PoE Gateway paired with a few eero PoE access points. They’ve created a seamless mesh network throughout my home.
- Thread Border Routers: I have three Apple TV 4K devices and the eero access points doubling as Thread border routers. This setup ensures excellent coverage and reliability.
- Matter Devices: My Aqara U400 and U100 locks are connected via Thread, and I’m eagerly waiting for the Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 to arrive.
Performance Insights:
Coming from a WiFi-based system, the responsiveness of Matter over Thread is mind-blowing. Commands execute almost instantly—no more waiting for devices to wake up or respond. The Thread mesh network is incredibly fast and reliable.
Additional Benefits:
- The Aqara M3 hub adds extra Thread border routing, which is great for future-proofing. Plus, it serves as a Zigbee bridge and IR control hub.
- Using PoE devices keeps things clean with no power adapters cluttering up my space.
