Matter update G4 doorbell

I also purchased the G4 based on the promise that Matter support would be coming. I now see that this statement has been removed from Aqara’s website, and it has suddenly become suspiciously quiet. Why are we not hearing anything anymore? Why did you make this promise if, to this day, you have not fulfilled it? Could you please provide us with an update?

Thanks!

Hi @heremiet54zeven ! I just knew that the newer cameras will get an update- so I was supposed the G410 will get one.
Where do you had this informations that G4 will get one?
Maybe it will get it later but as I know with the limitation that you must decide which way you go . HomeKit or Matter integration. And probably you won’t be able to go back then to HomeKit.

I just used the WayBackMachine, so you can check yourself.

They mentioned:
“Truly battery-powered video doorbell with HomeKit Secure Video support. It also supports local streaming to Google and Alexa smart displays , and is planned Matter support*.”

“* Matter support is planned to become available soon”
“And, the G4 is planned to receive Matter support via an OTA update.”

Now all those statements are gone and it got quiet.

Sorry to have kept you waiting for this function for so long, friend. If you pay attention to the latest product status of Aqara, you will find that Aqara is the only manufacturer in the world that has released Matter Camera and obtained CSA certification so far. This product is the latest G350 launched in Chinese Mainland. It uses powerful hardware to support the operation of HomeKit, Matter and Aqara’s own functions at the same time. Its overseas version will be sold soon.

We prioritize supporting the Matter Camera feature in our newly launched products. For old Aqara cameras, it is already difficult to natively support Matter through the device itself (as explained in my post below). We will indirectly make the old camera support Matter by using an Aqara Bridge device (partially supporting the Matter Controller Aqara Hub, likes the Hub M3), which means that your G4 doorbell will need to be paired with an Aqara Hub M3 or other hub to use the Matter feature in the future. Our support plan for old cameras will be arranged gradually for firmware iteration support based on the availability of development resources. We will post a message in the forum after the feature is developed, and you can directly contact me for an opportunity to test it in advance.

Of course, I need to be very clear to you that currently there are very few official client programs (apps or computer clients) that support Matter Camera. Only Samsung Smartthings has released their app to support testing, and they rely on a Samsung Matter Controller hub. Other ecosystems, including Home Assistant, do not have support plans yet. You need to figure out how to test this feature.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Just to make sure I understand correctly: I currently have an Aqara G5. Does this mean that, at some point, I will need to link the G4 to the G5 to enable Matter compatibility? And is this update still planned?

Do you happen to have any indication of the expected timeline?

I understand that Home Assistant is not supported yet, but I assume this will be added in due course. Since the technical groundwork is being laid in the March update (2026.3), is it anticipated that the remaining 1.5 features will be released in the subsequent months of 2026?

I would be more than happy to help test this in the future.

G5 Pro is not one of the hubs I mentioned. Currently, the only device preliminarily confirmed is Hub M3, and there may be other hubs in the future. Due to the need to transmit a large amount of audio and video data after bridging cameras, our strategy is to prioritize selecting new hubs with PoE communication capabilities. G5 Pro will also need to rely on Hub M3 to support Matter Camera in the future.

We may recruit overseas testers to participate in this test in April or May 2026

To be honest, this still feels quite misleading to me compared to what was previously advertised on your website. At no point was it mentioned that an Aqara hub would be required.

I purchased this doorbell with the understanding that it would receive a Matter update in the future. Now it appears that I would need to buy an Aqara Hub M3 to make this work later on. This was never stated on your website.

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this.

This is a tough one. When did you buy it and when was that text from WayBackMachine published?

The G4 was released in early 2023, around, if not before the Matter 1.1 spec. Cameras were not even added to Matter until this year in Matter 1.5.

Yes, I understand that it’s a difficult situation, but my point is simply that this does feel partly like false promises.

The Wayback Machine shows October 3, 2023 (you can check it yourself) with exactly the promises on which I based my purchase in December 2023. I understand that Matter did not support video at that time, but this is how it was presented back then. I relied on those promises and decided to buy it.

For me, this is also a lesson that in the future I should avoid buying products based on promised features that are not yet available.
I can imagine that I’m definitely not the only one who bought it based on those promises.

Oh, don’t get me wrong - I’m on your side. If Matter was advertised it definitely should not have been, especially so prematurely. It seems Aqara eventually realized this and changed their marketing copy. But yes, it’s a lesson learned to buy products based on the features they have, not the ones promised. Sorry that happened to you.

Friend, as the product manager responsible for the Aqara Cameras, I apologize for any confusion or unpleasant user experience have occurred. I have no intention of evading responsibility, and any efforts I am making now are aimed at making up for the mistakes caused by Aqara. There are many users are familiar with my work style. My responsibility is to take every user’s product feedback seriously and make improvements.

Let me briefly explain the reason for this issue:
Aqara has always been committed to creating products with an open ecosystem. We hope that our products can be integrated into the ecosystem that users are accustomed to using. Initially, we supported HomeKit, followed by Alexa, Google, smartthings, and so on. After Matter was born, Aqara also provided support on our hubs and other child devices as soon as possible. We first knew that Matter would support the camera before the release of V1.3. Out of trust in CSA, we promoted the G4 doorbell in advance. At that time, we did not know the specific scope of Matter Camera’s features or the hardware resources required to run it. However, due to our confidence in supporting other Matter devices, we believed that this job was not difficult. As you know, the SDK (V1.5) that ultimately supports Matter Camera was released in Q4 2025. We checked all the SEPC specifications in the first place, and then faced a problem: Integrating Matter 1.5 and adding Camera beyond our expectations for the memory consumption(contain DDR and flash), In order to balance the competition for hardware resources and avoid conflicts with other ecological resources(homeKit), we proposed a solution that allows users to choose the docking ecosystem they need to enable on Aqara Home (such as choosing HomeKit or Matter). However, this solution was ultimately not accepted by Apple because all Aqara cameras have been certified by HomeKit first. Our packaging and advertising emphasize that the product is a product supported by HomeKit. In the end, we decided to integrate Matter 1.5 on the new product with sufficient hardware resources. For the old product, we provided the above bridging solution through Aqara Hub, which is actually sharing other Aqara devices’ hardware resources to relieve the weak hardware for the camera.

Matter 1.5.1 has been officially released, and according to CSA requirements, it fixes some known bugs in 1.5. We will soon update G350’s firmware. Matter Camera is not yet mature, and we have been actively cooperating with CSA to improve the definition of Matter Camera. Therefore, at this stage, we are not in a hurry to integrate old cameras with Matter.

To prove that what I said is true, I provide a screenshot of our communication email with CSA, which proves Aqara’s positive attitude in supporting Matter.

Thanks for the clarification, I really appreciate that.

However, I do want to point out that this is exactly the issue I’m raising here.

The situation changed (as you said, due to hardware limitations), and that is understandable. Technology evolves and standards change, I completely get that. But I bought this doorbell because Aqara stated that Matter support would be added through an OTA update. Based on what we know now, that information appears to have been incomplete, especially if an additional device such as the M3 hub is required.

Also those statements have now disappeared from the website, and the communication around this has become quite vague. To be very honest, from a customer perspective that does feel a bit strange.

In both cases, if I want a Matter doorbell now, I either have to buy the new G410? or purchase an M3 hub. In both situations, that means spending another €100. While I originally thought it would simply be enabled through an OTA update.

I also purchased the Aqara G4 specifically because of the promised Matter support. I already have an Aqara Hub E1 in my setup and am ready to test the integration. Please include me in the upcoming recruitment phase for beta testing as I am highly interested in Matter with this doorbell.

I’m afraid the E1 hub won’t be enough.

Hello I have the same issue that I bought the camera because of the Matter Support that was promised.

Is there a User friendly chance to geht the matter Support without spending other 100€ for a new Camera or Bridge?

They should provide us a free bridge at least, what Aqara did falls under False Advertising or Deceptive Trade Practices. Failing to deliver a core promised feature that influenced a purchase decision is a violation of consumer protection laws in many regions.
