Maximizing Home Security with Motion Sensors and Automations

I’ve recently installed an Aqara motion sensor to manage the lights in my basement stairwell, and it’s been a game-changer. The lights automatically turn on when I walk by and stay on for 90 seconds, which is perfect for most of my needs. However, I noticed an issue when my spouse and I decided to stay downstairs to watch a movie. The motion sensor would activate unnecessarily, causing the lights to come on when we didn’t want them to. This was a bit frustrating, as we had to wave our hands around to keep the lights off, which felt a bit silly.

After some research, I stumbled upon a solution involving the Aqara FP1 presence sensor. The idea is to disable the motion sensor when we’re in the basement for an extended period, like watching a movie, and re-enable it after we leave. Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Motion Sensor Automation: The Aqara motion sensor triggers the lights to turn on for 90 seconds. This works well when I’m just passing through the stairwell.
  2. Presence Detection: The Aqara FP1 presence sensor detects when someone is in the basement. If I’m in my office, no presence is detected, so the motion sensor remains active. However, if we’re in the home theater, the presence sensor detects activity and disables the motion sensor for 2 hours.
  3. Re-enabling the Sensor: The motion sensor will automatically re-enable unless the FP1 detects motion again, ensuring it’s ready for the next time we need it.

This setup has been a lifesaver. It keeps the lights on when I need them and off when I don’t, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. I’m now considering expanding this automation to other areas of my home, like the living room, to avoid similar issues during movie nights or when entertaining guests.

If anyone has tips or suggestions for improving this setup, I’d love to hear them! It’s amazing how a little creativity and the right tools can make such a big difference in daily life.
