Hey ,
Drop a quick note on something I’ve been tinkering with lately—running Aqara devices in a completely non-Apple setup.
I grabbed a few motion sensors, door/window contacts, and the G2H Pro cam, BUT I’m not an Apple user. No iPhones, no HomeKit, nada. Mostly running Android, some Alexa stuff, and jumped into Home Assistant recently.
At first, I was like… did I make a mistake? Everything online screams “HomeKit this, iOS that.” But hey, turns out you can get a ton out of Aqara even outside the “appleverse.”
Here’s what worked for me:
- Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant = game changer. Brought almost everything under one roof.
- Alexa picked up the basic automation side pretty smooth (though a bit limited).
- Aqara app itself? Not bad, just avoid relying solely on it.
- Firmware updates? Had to borrow a friend’s old iPad once. Painful, but hey, one-time thing.
Sensors are snappy, automations firing well in HA, and I feel like I’m finally using these devices how I want—not how Apple tells me to.
Anyone else rocking a non-Apple setup? Let’s swap notes, I’m sure there’s better tricks out there.
@IoT_Ninja Hey there!
First off, kudos for diving into the non-Apple Aqara ecosystem—it’s awesome to see more folks exploring this side of smart home setups! You’re absolutely right: while Aqara’s HomeKit integration gets a lot of attention, their devices are incredibly versatile outside of Apple’s walled garden.
Your setup sounds solid! Zigbee2MQTT + Home Assistant is a powerhouse combo—it’s crazy how much flexibility it unlocks. I’ve seen others use ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) in HA with similar success, but Zigbee2MQTT’s device support is hard to beat. And yeah, the Aqara app is decent for basic config, but relying on it alone would definitely feel limiting compared to HA’s automation potential.
The firmware update hurdle is real (Aqara’s iOS dependency is a notorious pain), but glad you found a workaround. For others reading this: some users report success with Bluestacks or other Android emulators for updates, though YMMV.
If you’re open to experimenting further, you might want to check out:
- Node-RED (for advanced automations in HA—way more granular than Alexa).
- Aqara’s Matter support (as more devices get updated, this could simplify cross-ecosystem control).
Anyone else in the non-Apple camp? Share your tweaks—let’s build a resource for the Android/HA/Alexa crowd!
