Migrating from Indigo to Hubitat: A Smooth Transition with Alexa Integration

After years of using Indigo on macOS, I decided it was time for a change. The lack of Alexa voice control integration was a major pain point, and I knew there had to be a better solution out there. After some research, I landed on Hubitat, and I couldn’t be happier with the decision!

The Migration Process

Migrating my ~40 Z-Wave devices and configurations took about a day and went smoothly overall. The only minor hiccup was dealing with the wonkiness of excluding and including some Z-Wave devices, but that’s likely not Hubitat’s fault. The process was straightforward, and I didn’t encounter any major issues.

Why Hubitat?

Here’s what really sold me on Hubitat:

  • Hardware Appliance Form Factor: It’s one less device to manage compared to my old Mac Mini setup. Plus, the built-in Z-Wave support eliminates the need for a separate dongle.
  • Browser-Based Admin Interface: No more dealing with Screen Sharing to access the Indigo admin UI. It’s a huge improvement.
  • Affordable Pricing: The Hubitat hardware appliance costs less than $100, which is a steal compared to Indigo’s pricing model. Plus, there are no hidden costs for updates or major upgrades.

Initial Impressions

  • Alexa Voice Control: This was a deal-breaker for me, and it exceeded my expectations. Devices are made available almost instantly via Alexa after any changes.
  • Hue Lights Integration: Just as seamless as Indigo, if not more so.
  • Logging Support in Rules App: The ability to test and refine rules with logging was a game-changer. It made troubleshooting much easier.
  • Community Forum: The Discourse-based forum is vibrant, and the Hubitat staff are very active and helpful.

Areas for Improvement

While Hubitat has been a great experience overall, there are a few areas that could use some work:

  • Web UI Confusion: Some dialogs are a bit confusing when configuring settings.
  • Dashboards: They feel a bit clunky and not as sophisticated as I’d like.
  • Mobile App: It’s functional, but not as polished as I’d hope.
  • Cloud Backups: I’d love to see automatic backups to cloud storage like Amazon S3.

Next Steps

I’m excited to explore more features like HomeKit integration and the ability to send voice commands via Echo devices. These capabilities will help simplify my setup even further.

Overall, I’m thrilled with Hubitat. It’s been a stable and reliable platform, and the Alexa integration alone makes it worth the switch. If you’re considering a change from Indigo or another platform, I highly recommend giving Hubitat a try!
