I’m thrilled to share my journey of migrating from SmartThings to OpenHAB, a decision driven by my desire for a more centralized and open-source home automation solution. After years of relying on cloud-based systems, I’m excited to take control of my smart home setup with OpenHAB running on Ubuntu within a VirtualBox environment. My setup includes an Aeotec Z-Stick Gen 5 for Z-Wave connectivity, and I’ve managed to pair a few devices successfully, which is a great start!
However, I’ve encountered a hurdle with rules not loading as expected. Despite multiple installations and manual creation of the rules directory, my rules aren’t executing, and there’s no indication in the logs that they’ve been loaded. I’ve tried the simplest rule possible, but it doesn’t seem to trigger. I’m reaching out to the community for guidance on troubleshooting this issue, as I believe it’s crucial for fully leveraging OpenHAB’s potential.
In addition to this, I’ve noticed some challenges with device compatibility and integration, particularly with Zigbee devices like the SENGLED bulbs. While I’m aware of the potential for these devices to work without their hub, the process has been more complex than anticipated. I’m curious to hear if others have successfully integrated similar devices and what steps they took to achieve seamless operation.
On a more positive note, I’ve been impressed by the flexibility and customization options OpenHAB offers. The ability to create detailed rules and automate routines is something I’m eager to explore further once the initial setup issues are resolved. I’m also excited about the possibility of expanding my setup with more Z-Wave devices, which I believe will enhance the overall functionality of my smart home.
If anyone has insights or tips on resolving the rules issue, or experiences with integrating Zigbee devices without their hubs, I’d greatly appreciate your input. Let’s continue to build and share knowledge to make the most of our smart home setups!
