Hello everyone, I’m excited to share my journey of migrating from an old X10 system to a modern smart home setup. After using X10 for over 30 years, it’s time to embrace newer technologies that offer more flexibility and integration capabilities. I currently run Linux on my laptop with an XP VM controlling a CM15a, and I also have an old alarm system with contact sensors. While everything works fine, I want to add cameras and integrate everything seamlessly.
I’ve been considering the Hubitat ecosystem, but I’m still exploring how it can act like an alarm system. I’ve heard that Z-Wave or Zigbee sensors can be used, but I’m unclear on how to arm or disarm the system. A keypad or touch panel would be ideal for easy control. I also hope to use my existing X10 lamp modules until I can expand further.
I’ve read about other controllers like ISY, Vera, and HomeSeer, but I’m not sure which fits best. I’m looking for advice on choosing the right controller and sensors, especially since I need about 20 window sensors and 3 door sensors. Any tips on budgeting and setup would be greatly appreciated!
I’m also curious about how others have integrated legacy systems with modern smart home devices. Have you faced similar challenges? What solutions worked best for you? I’m eager to learn and make the most of my new setup while respecting my past investments. Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions!
