Migrating to a New Hub: Tips and Tricks for a Seamless Transition

I recently found myself in a bit of a pickle after a firmware update fried my Zigbee functionality. SmartThings tried to repair it, but my hub just wasn’t the same. They sent me a replacement hub—yippee!—but now I’m faced with a very laborious manual migration to the new hub. With around 100 devices, loads of automation, and home monitoring in play, this is no small task.

I’ve started by organizing my devices into categories—lights, sensors, appliances, etc.—to tackle them one by one. I’ve also been keeping a detailed list of each device’s settings and automations to ensure nothing gets lost in the shuffle. For anyone else in a similar situation, here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way:

  1. Prioritize Critical Devices: Start with devices that are essential for daily life, like lights, thermostats, and security sensors. This ensures you have the basics covered before moving on to less critical items.
  2. Backup Everything: Before you begin, make sure to back up your current setup. This includes device configurations, automations, and any custom rules you’ve created.
  3. Test as You Go: After migrating a group of devices, take the time to test them thoroughly. This helps catch any issues early on and prevents bigger headaches down the line.
  4. Leverage SmartThings’ Tools: SmartThings has some handy features for migrating devices, like the SmartThings app’s device migration tool and the ability to export/import automations.

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’m slowly getting everything back up and running. If anyone has additional tips or tricks, I’d love to hear them! Let’s make this migration as smooth as possible for everyone.
