Migrating Z-Wave Devices from Windows to Raspberry Pi

I recently decided to migrate my Z-Wave setup from an old Windows laptop to a Raspberry Pi 2, and I wanted to share my experience and some tips for anyone considering a similar transition. Setting up openHAB on the Pi was straightforward, but I knew the Z-Wave migration needed careful handling to avoid any issues, especially since my heating and hot water depend on it.

One of the key questions I had was whether I needed to exclude all devices from the Z-Wave network on my Windows machine before moving the Z-Stick to the Pi. From what I understand, the Z-Stick holds the network details, so theoretically, it should carry over without re-inclusion. However, I decided to play it safe and exclude a few devices to test the process. Thankfully, everything worked smoothly, and my devices reconnected without any hassle.

If you’re planning a similar migration, here are a few tips:

  • Backup Your Configuration: Make sure you have backups of your items, sitemap, and persistence files.
  • Test Exclusion and Re-Inclusion: Start with a single device to understand the process.
  • Monitor the Network: Keep an eye on the Z-Wave network health after migration to ensure all devices are functioning as expected.

This experience reinforced how resilient Z-Wave networks can be when handled correctly. It’s a great feeling to have everything up and running again, especially when it’s critical for home comfort!
