Mimicking the Flint Weatherball with Hubitat

I’ve been really curious about the possibility of recreating the Flint Weatherball using my Hubitat setup. For those who aren’t familiar, the Weatherball is a local landmark that changes colors based on the weather forecast. It’s a fun and quirky way to stay updated on the weather without even checking the app!

I’ve started brainstorming how this could work with my current setup. The idea would be to have a smart light or LED strip that changes colors based on the weather forecast data. I know Hubitat has some great integrations with weather services, so pulling in the forecast data shouldn’t be too difficult. The challenge would be mapping that data to specific colors and ensuring the system updates in real-time.

I’ve also been thinking about how to handle the different scenarios. For example, if the forecast predicts rain, maybe the light could pulse or dim slowly to mimic the blinking effect of the original Weatherball. If it’s going to be warmer, a gradual shift to red could work, and for cooler temperatures, transitioning to blue would make sense. I’d love to hear if anyone has experience with similar projects or has tips on how to make this integration smooth and reliable.

This project feels like a fun way to combine my love for home automation with a bit of local nostalgia. I’m excited to dive into the details and see how creative I can get with the setup! If anyone has tried something like this before, I’d love to hear about your experiences and any lessons learned along the way.
