Minimizing Data Usage with HE: A User's Journey

I recently noticed unusual data usage on my cellular modem, which only connects to my Hubitat (HE) system. After some investigation, I discovered that the HE was sending/receiving data even when no cloud services or notifications were active. This puzzled me, as I assumed data usage would only occur during updates or notifications.

To diagnose the issue, I unplugged the HE from the hub and observed no network traffic. When I plugged it back in, random traffic resumed. This confirmed that the HE was indeed communicating with the Hubitat server.

I reached out to the community to understand why this happens and how to minimize traffic. Through research and discussions, I learned that the HE periodically checks in with the Hubitat server for updates, status verification, and potential firmware improvements. While this is normal, it can contribute to unexpected data usage.

To address this, I explored settings within the HE and found options to adjust update frequency and notification preferences. By optimizing these settings, I was able to reduce unnecessary traffic while still maintaining essential functionality.

This experience taught me the importance of understanding device communication patterns and the value of community support in troubleshooting. If anyone else is experiencing similar issues, I recommend checking your device’s update and notification settings and reaching out to the community for additional insights.

Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge and helped me navigate this challenge!
