Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project with you all. I’ve had SmartThings for about a year now and decided to take it to the next level by monitoring my deep freezer. This freezer holds several hundred dollars worth of food, so I wanted to ensure it’s always running optimally. I came across the Fibaro FGK-101 Temperature & Door/Window sensor and thought it’d be the perfect solution. However, getting it set up wasn’t as straightforward as I hoped.
Initially, I tried using the custom device handler mentioned in a forum thread, but it didn’t quite work out. After some research, I discovered that the sensor’s firmware might be different from what the existing handler supported. With some trial and error, I managed to tweak the code to make it work seamlessly with my setup. I even added a few features, like color coding for temperature readings and an offset option for more accurate measurements.
Now, I have a system where I get a push alert if the temperature drops below 5 degrees, a phone call from IFTTT at 7 degrees, and another call at 9 degrees. It’s been running smoothly for two weeks now, giving me peace of mind knowing my food is safe. I thought I’d share my code and setup in case anyone else is looking to do something similar.
It was a bit challenging at first, but figuring it out was incredibly rewarding. I hope this helps someone else out there who might be stuck or looking for a similar solution. If anyone has any questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them below! ![]()
