Morning Automation Setup: Lights, Coffee, and Comfort

Good morning everyone! I’ve been diving into setting up my morning routine with my smart home devices, and I wanted to share my experience and a few tips that might help others looking to do something similar. :sun_with_face:

The Goal:
I wanted to create a seamless morning experience where my lights gradually brighten, my coffee starts brewing, and the temperature in my living room slowly rises, all before I even get out of bed. The idea was to make waking up feel more natural and less jarring.

The Setup:
I’ve got a mix of smart devices from different brands, so compatibility was a key consideration. Here’s what I used:

  • Smart Lights: Philips Hue for their smooth dimming and color temperature adjustments.
  • Smart Plug: TP-Link Kasa to control my coffee maker.
  • Smart Thermostat: Ecobee for precise temperature control and scheduling.

The Process:

  1. Scheduling the Lights: I set up a routine in my hub app to start dimming the lights in my bedroom 30 minutes before my wake-up time. They reach full brightness by the time my alarm goes off. It’s like having a sunrise alarm, but with actual lights! :sunrise:
  2. Coffee on Demand: Using IFTTT, I created a trigger that turns on the TP-Link smart plug at my wake-up time, which starts the coffee brewing. It’s magical how a warm cup of coffee is ready by the time I stumble into the kitchen. :coffee:
  3. Temperature Control: I programmed my Ecobee thermostat to gradually increase the temperature in my living room starting 20 minutes before my alarm. It’s a subtle change, but it makes a big difference in how I feel when I start my day. :jigsaw:

The Challenges:

  • Timing: Finding the right balance between too gradual and too abrupt was tricky. I ended up testing different intervals until everything felt just right.
  • Compatibility: Not all my devices worked seamlessly together, but using a central hub helped bridge the gaps. It’s been a great learning experience! :bulb:

The Payoff:
This setup has completely transformed my mornings. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about creating a routine that starts the day on a positive note. Plus, knowing that everything is automated frees up my brain to focus on more important things, like what to wear or what to tackle first.

Tips for Others:

  • Start Small: Don’t try to automate everything at once. Start with one room or one task and build from there.
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to tweak your settings. What works for someone else might not work for you, so find what feels right.
  • Use Routines: Most hubs and apps have routine builders that make setting up sequences easy, even for beginners.

I’d love to hear how others have set up their morning routines! What devices do you use? Any tips or tricks you’d like to share? Let’s keep the conversation going! :rocket:
