Hi everyone! I’m really excited to share my latest project with you all. After months of planning and research, I’ve finally started working on installing motorized blinds for my home. This project is not just about aesthetics—it’s also about solving a unique problem with my mischievous Boxer, Taz. ![]()
Taz loves sitting by the windows to watch birds and squirrels outside. Unfortunately, she has a knack for forcing the blinds open by sticking her head between the slats, which has caused quite a bit of damage over time. My goal is to create a system that allows her to enjoy the view without damaging the blinds. Plus, it’s a great excuse to dive deeper into home automation! ![]()
Project Scope
I plan to install motorized blinds in two main areas:
- Dog-Sensored Blinds: These will be controlled by motion or proximity sensors. When Taz approaches, the blinds will lift just enough for her to see outside without her needing to force them open.
- Living Room Automation: A full system for the living room, complete with voice control and scheduling options.
Hardware Considerations
After researching available options in Canada, I’ve narrowed it down to a few potential brands:
- Hunter-Douglas: Known for quality and customization, but a bit pricey.
- Soomfy/Dooya: Offers tube motors that I can order online, which might be more cost-effective.
- Bali: Custom-made options, but I’m unsure about OpenHAB compatibility.
I’m leaning towards a mix of Dooya motors for their affordability and reliability, paired with ESP8266-based sensors for the automation aspect. The plan is to control everything through OpenHAB, which I’ve been using for lighting and AV for some time now.
Challenges and Learning Curve
As a Beginner/Intermediate user, this project is pushing my boundaries. Setting up the sensors and integrating them with OpenHAB has been a learning experience, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve had to troubleshoot a few hiccups, like ensuring the sensors are sensitive enough to detect Taz without overreacting to other movements. ![]()
Why This Matters
Beyond solving Taz’s window problem, this project is a stepping stone for more comprehensive home automation. It’s taught me the importance of thorough research, patience, and the value of community support. If anyone has tips or recommendations on hardware or setup, I’d love to hear them! ![]()
Looking Forward
I’m really excited to see this project come together. It’s not just about the technology—it’s about creating a smarter, more convenient living space for both me and my furry friend. Plus, it’s a fun DIY challenge that keeps me learning and growing in the world of home automation. ![]()
