Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project of setting up a multi-room audio system using MPD and Spotify. It’s been a journey, but the result is fantastic! Here’s how I did it.First, I mapped out my zones: kitchen, bathroom, terrace, and living room. Each zone has a stereo speaker setup. The core of the system is a Linux server running MPD, openHAB, and the Spotify client. The server uses a 7.1 soundcard to handle the audio output, which is then distributed to individual amplifiers for each room. One of the key advantages of this setup is the perfect sync across all zones. No more dealing with out-of-sync audio! Plus, it’s all centralized, so there’s no need for hidden Raspberry Pis or expensive closed systems like Sonos. I can easily mix additional audio sources, like a doorbell, into the active outputs too.I also wanted to mention the modular hardware aspect. I can choose any DSP by selecting the right soundcard, and the same goes for amplifiers and speakers. This flexibility has been a game-changer for me.For those interested in the technical details, I used MPD for each family member, allowing them to control their own zones. Spotify integration was a bit tricky but doable by looping the audio stream back from the server’s soundcard to a local stream. This way, any Spotify client in the home network can use the server as an output device.I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has tips to improve this setup! ![]()
