In reality the internal unity still works, but the external unity gives no signs of life, either when wired or with batteries. Is there a way to just purchase the external unity -possibly with the silicon cover to protect it from rain - without having to repurchase the full product?

My recommendation is to contact Aqara support support@aqara.com . Describe your situation, maybe they can advise you something. Unfortunately, G4 does not have a degree of moisture protection for placement in the yard (precipitation, rain, snow), a canopy is needed for the outdoor unit.
