My Custom Camera Setup and Automation Journey

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent project and some lessons learned along the way. I recently installed a Reolink 823A-16X camera to monitor bird activity in my garden, and it’s been an exciting journey!

Initially, I faced some challenges with the camera’s PTZ functionality. I noticed that when I manually moved the camera to track birds, it often struggled to focus properly, especially when birds were in the background with moving leaves. This was a bit frustrating, but I decided to dive into Home Assistant to find a solution.

After some research, I discovered that I could create custom buttons in my HA dashboard to not only move the camera to specific presets but also adjust the focus level programmatically. This was a game-changer! Now, with a single click, the camera moves to a preset position and adjusts the focus to capture the birds clearly. It’s amazing how HA can automate even the most specific tasks!

I also wanted to share a tip for anyone dealing with similar issues. If you’re using PTZ cameras and experiencing focus problems, consider setting up custom scripts or automations in HA to adjust focus levels based on your needs. It’s a small tweak but makes a big difference in the viewing experience.

On a lighter note, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the bird-watching experience this setup has provided. It’s incredible to see the variety of birds visiting my garden and even spot some fawns and their mom! The camera’s zoom feature has been especially helpful in capturing these moments without disturbing the animals.

I’d love to hear from others who have set up similar systems or have tips for improving PTZ camera performance. Let’s continue to explore and share how we can make our smart home setups more enjoyable and functional!

Happy bird-watching and happy automating! :bird::sparkles:
