Creating a smart bedroom has been a passion project of mine for quite some time now. I wanted to share my journey and some tips I’ve picked up along the way in case anyone else is looking to embark on a similar adventure. ![]()

I started by focusing on lighting. I’ve always loved the idea of having LED strips that can change colors based on my mood. After some research, I decided to go with Govee LED strips. They were relatively easy to install and come with a variety of color options. I’ve found that using calming blues in the evening helps me wind down, while vibrant colors during the day make the space feel energized. Here are a few pictures I’ve taken showcasing the different vibes I’ve created: ![]()

Another thing I wanted to ensure was seamless control. I integrated everything through Home Assistant, which has been a lifesaver. I set up a climate card to keep track of the room’s temperature and humidity, and I made sure it was small enough to fit neatly into my dashboard. Here’s a quick tip: if you’re looking to customize your climate card, there are some great templates available that allow you to tweak the size and layout to suit your needs! ![]()

I also wanted to incorporate motion lighting. I found that using lux as a condition for motion lighting made a huge difference. It ensures that the lights come on only when needed and adjust based on the ambient light. However, I noticed that using lux can sometimes make the lights respond a bit slower. If anyone has tips on optimizing this, I’d love to hear them! ![]()

One challenge I faced was setting up the right sensors. I ended up using Xiaomi motion sensors, but they weren’t always picking up motion consistently. I did some research and discovered that ensuring the sensors have a clear line of sight and adjusting their sensitivity settings helped a lot. Now, the lights reliably turn on when I enter the room, which has been a huge improvement! ![]()

Finally, I wanted to make sure everything was integrated smoothly. I used MQTT to connect all my devices, and it’s been working perfectly. If anyone is just starting out with MQTT, I’d recommend checking out some tutorials on how to set it up with Home Assistant. It’s incredibly powerful and opens up so many possibilities! ![]()
