I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation with Hubitat, and it’s been an incredible journey! 
I wanted to share some of my experiences and tips in case they can help others who are just starting out or looking to expand their setup.
Getting Started with Z-Wave Devices
One of the first things I tackled was setting up Z-Wave devices. I have several relays that I migrated from SmartThings, and I was initially concerned about finding the right device handler in Hubitat. After some research, I discovered that while there isn’t a direct equivalent for the “Z-Wave Virtual Momentary Contact Switch” DTH, I could use the generic Z-Wave switch with a bit of customization. This allowed me to automate turning my relays on and off for a few seconds, which was exactly what I needed. It was a bit of a learning curve, but the flexibility of Hubitat made it worth it!
Camera Placement Tips
Another area I focused on was optimizing my camera setup. I found that placing the camera on a thin TV mount could be tricky. A simple but effective tip I came across was using a piece of cardboard from the immersion box packaging to create a makeshift counterweight. This not only helped balance the camera but also allowed me to adjust the angle for better coverage. It might seem minor, but it made a significant difference in the overall setup!
Automating My Home
Automation has been a game-changer for me. I set up a simple system where my lights turn on when I arrive home and adjust based on the time of day. Using Hubitat’s rules engine, I was able to create a seamless experience without any complicated coding. It’s amazing how a few well-placed automations can make your home feel more connected and efficient.
Challenges and Solutions
Of course, not everything went smoothly. I encountered a few hiccups, like getting my Nest cameras to trigger specific actions based on vehicle detection. After some digging, I realized that while the camera itself detects vehicles, integrating that into automations requires a bit of workaround. I ended up using a template sensor to monitor the events and trigger the desired actions, which worked perfectly!
