Starting my smart home journey has been both exciting and challenging. I’ve been experimenting with integrating various devices from different brands, and it’s been a learning experience every step of the way.
One of my first projects was setting up a system to control my Nexa PER-1500 power plugs through Homey using 433 MHz signals. It took some digging through forums and experimenting with conversion lists, but I finally got it working! The satisfaction of seeing those plugs respond to my voice commands was incredible.
Another area I’ve been focusing on is home security. I installed a camera with motion detection at my entrance, and while the motion sensor works perfectly to turn on the lights, I’m still figuring out how to get it to turn them off after a minute of inactivity. I’ve tried a few different automation scripts, but it’s been a bit hit or miss. If anyone has tips or a reliable setup, I’d love to hear about it!
I’ve also been exploring the world of media automation. I’d love to set up a system where I can tell Siri to shuffle play a random episode of my favorite show on Plex. It sounds simple enough, but getting the timing right—like making sure the TV turns on first and the app opens before the media starts playing—has been a bit tricky.
One thing I’ve learned is the importance of community support. Whether it’s troubleshooting obscure device connections or finding creative solutions for automations, the forums have been a goldmine of information. I’m grateful for everyone who shares their knowledge and experiences.
If anyone has similar projects or has faced and overcome challenges like these, I’d love to hear your stories and tips. Let’s keep learning and growing together in this smart home adventure!
