My Smart Home Journey: Lights, Automation, and Community Support

I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation for the past year, and it’s been an incredible journey filled with learning, creativity, and a touch of frustration. Let me share some of my experiences and insights with you all.

The Magic of Night Lights
One of my favorite projects has been setting up the perfect night light system. I use a cloud-based automation that dims the lights to 1% when it’s time to sleep. It’s just enough light to navigate safely without disturbing my sleep. It’s such a small detail, but it makes a huge difference in my daily life.

Fibaro Dimmer Setup Challenges
I recently installed two Fibaro Dimmer 2 units. One is connected to a regular switch and LED bulbs, while the other controls LED spots without a switch. The setup was a bit tricky because I didn’t have enough space in the wallbox. I ended up using an association on the LED bulbs dimmer to control the other dimmer. However, there was a delay when flipping the switch. After some research and tweaking, I found that creating a scene helped eliminate the delay. It was a great learning experience!

Outdoor Lighting Show
Over the summer, I installed roof lights to prepare for the holiday season. Now that we’re decorating for Christmas, I’ve been capturing videos and photos of the different scenes set up on my outdoor showcase. The neighborhood has started to notice, and people have stopped by to express their gratitude and admiration. It’s been heartwarming to see how my lights bring joy to the community. I even inspired a neighbor to install some permanent outdoor lighting!

Automation for Trash Day
Another project I’m proud of is an automation I set up to remind me to take out the trash. Since trash is collected on Mondays, I wanted to be reminded on Fridays if I’m not at work over the weekend. I used the Waste Collection Schedule integration and the Workday Sensor addon to create a smart automation. It checks if today is a workday and if Monday is a holiday. If so, it sends me a reminder on Friday. It’s been working perfectly and has saved me from forgetting the trash multiple times.

Solar Charging and Water Management
I’ve also been exploring sustainable solutions. I’ve set up a small solar panel system to charge a power station in my basement. It’s been a fun project, and I’m learning a lot about energy management. Additionally, I’ve added water sensors and a smart valve to my system. In case of a leak, the system alerts me and even calls my landline. It’s reassuring to know my home is protected.

A Year of Growth
Reflecting on the past year, I’ve come a long way. From setting up my first smart lights to creating complex automations, each project has taught me something new. The community here has been invaluable. Whether it’s troubleshooting a delay in my Fibaro setup or finding the right UPS for my network cabinet, the support I’ve received has been amazing.

Final Thoughts
Smart home automation is more than just gadgets and apps; it’s about creating a lifestyle that suits you. It’s about making your home more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable. I’m excited to see what the future holds and can’t wait to share more of my journey with you all. Here’s to another year of innovation and growth!
