Hey everyone! I wanted to share my recent journey into home automation, as it’s been a fantastic learning experience. I’m still pretty new to this, but I’ve managed to set up a system that works well for my needs, and I’d love to hear your thoughts or tips!### The GoalI have two rooms with TVs, home theaters, and satellite receivers, and I wanted to:1. Share my PS3, multimedia player, and PC between both rooms.2. Control all devices (TVs, home theaters, Blu-ray players, etc.) from my iPad or iPod, no matter where I am in the house.### The SetupAfter some research, I decided on the following setup:- Vera Lite: As the central hub for my system.- SQ Blaster Plus: To handle IR signals.- IR Extender: For extending the IR range.- PS3IR-1000 Adapter: To control the PS3 via IR.**Step-by-Step:**1. Cabinet Setup: I installed all my devices (satellite receivers, home theaters, Blu-ray player, PS3, etc.) in a hidden, ventilated cabinet.2. IR Adapters: Installed the PS3IR-1000 adapter inside the cabinet and IR transmitters/receivers in each room.3. Vera Integration: Used Vera to integrate all devices and set up the necessary automations.### How It Works- Device Control: I can now control all my devices from my iPad or iPod, whether I’m in the living room, kitchen, or anywhere else in the house.- Media Sharing: My PS3 and multimedia player are accessible from both rooms, which is great for sharing content with family and friends.- Scene Automation: I’ve set up scenes for different activities (e.g., movie night, gaming), which makes switching between modes super easy.### Tips for Newbies1. Start Small: Don’t try to automate everything at once. Start with one room or one device and gradually expand.2. IR Extenders Are Essential: If you’re dealing with multiple rooms, IR extenders can save you a lot of headaches.3. Use a Central Hub: Vera has been a lifesaver for me. It simplifies managing all my devices and automations in one place.4. Experiment with Scenes: Scenes make life so much easier. I love how I can set up different modes for different activities.### Challenges and Solutions- IR Signal Issues: Initially, I had some trouble with IR signals not reaching all devices. Installing additional IR transmitters solved this.- Device Compatibility: Not all devices worked out of the box. Some required specific configurations or firmware updates.### Final ThoughtsSetting up my home automation system has been a rewarding experience. It’s made my life more convenient and has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I’m excited to continue exploring and expanding my system. If anyone has questions or suggestions, feel free to reach out! I’d love to hear about your setups too!Cheers, [Your Name]
