Hey everyone! I wanted to share my experience with integrating the NEO Coolcam motion detector into my openHAB setup. After a bit of trial and error, I managed to get it working smoothly, and I thought I’d document the process in case others are facing similar challenges.
Initially, I encountered the same issue as many others—my NEO Coolcam showed up as an unknown device in the network. I tried the usual troubleshooting steps: waking the device, excluding and including it, and even performing a factory reset. Despite these efforts, the device still wasn’t recognized properly.
After some research and digging through logs, I discovered that the device was responding to sensor commands but wasn’t being mapped to the correct thing type in openHAB. Here’s what I did to resolve the issue:
- Device Wake-Up: Ensure the device is fully awake and responsive. I found that a firm tap on the sensor helped wake it up reliably.
- Exclusion/Inclusion: I performed a full exclusion followed by inclusion. This involved removing the device from the network and then re-adding it through the Z-Wave settings in openHAB.
- Firmware Check: I verified that the device firmware was up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues.
- Log Review: I carefully reviewed the logs to identify any patterns or errors. The logs indicated that the device was responding to sensor commands but wasn’t being recognized as a known thing type.
- Manual Configuration: As a last resort, I manually configured the device in the openHAB items file, specifying the correct command classes and endpoints. This involved some trial and error, but eventually, the device started functioning as expected.
I hope this helps someone else who’s struggling with the NEO Coolcam integration. It’s a great device once it’s set up properly, and the motion detection is very reliable. If anyone has additional tips or experiences to share, I’d love to hear them!
