I’ve recently made the switch to the Octopus Intelligent tariff in the UK, which offers reduced electricity rates during off-peak hours. While I’ve been tracking my energy usage with the Geo Home integration, I noticed it doesn’t account for the fluctuating electricity prices throughout the day. This means my energy dashboard doesn’t reflect the actual cost savings I could be achieving.
To address this, I installed both the Octopus Energy and Octopus Intelligent Tariff integrations in HomeAssistant. The Octopus Energy integration provides hourly usage statistics, though it requires a Octopus Home Mini for real-time data. Meanwhile, the Octopus Intelligent Tariff integration tracks when electricity costs are reduced but doesn’t monitor usage.
After some experimentation, I found a way to combine these integrations. By leveraging HomeAssistant’s automation capabilities, I created a custom setup that adjusts my smart home devices based on the current electricity rates. For instance, during off-peak hours, I schedule my washing machine and dishwasher to run, optimizing energy consumption and costs.
This integration not only helps me save money but also aligns with my goal of making my home more energy-efficient. I’d love to hear how others are maximizing their energy savings with similar setups!
