Onkyo 676 Configuration and Automation Tips

Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into setting up my Onkyo 676 AV receiver with Home Assistant and wanted to share my journey and some tips I’ve picked up along the way. Hopefully, this can help someone else avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered!

The Setup Journey
I started by configuring my Onkyo 676 as a media player in Home Assistant. It was pretty straightforward at first, but I ran into an interesting issue where a duplicate entry for my Onkyo appeared in my main devices tab. This was a bit confusing, but I figured out that disabling the discovery feature and setting everything up manually resolved the issue. Now, my Onkyo integrates seamlessly with my setup!

Automation Fun
One of the things I love most about Home Assistant is the ability to create automations. I’ve set up my Onkyo to switch inputs based on what’s playing. For example, when I start watching something on Kodi, it automatically switches to the TV input. It’s these little touches that really make my home feel smart!

Tips for Others
If you’re setting up your Onkyo or any media player, here are a few tips:

  • Manual Configuration: If you run into duplication issues, try disabling discovery and setting everything up manually. It gives you more control.
  • Input Sources: Take the time to map out all your input sources in the config. It makes automations much smoother.
  • Scene Integration: Consider integrating your media player with scenes. For instance, a ‘Movie Night’ scene could dim the lights and switch your Onkyo to the correct input.

Community Support
I’d like to give a shoutout to the amazing community here. When I was stuck with the duplicate device issue, someone suggested the manual setup approach, and it worked like a charm. It’s awesome to be part of such a helpful community!

If anyone has questions about setting up their Onkyo or any media player, feel free to ask. I’m happy to share what I’ve learned!
