I’ve been experimenting with the Sonoff SNZB-02 presence sensors for outdoor use, and I wanted to share my findings and tips for optimizing their battery life, especially in cold weather conditions.
Challenges with Cold Temperatures
During the harsh winter months, I noticed that the CR2450 batteries in my outdoor SNZB-02 sensors were draining much faster than expected. The cold weather caused the battery voltage to drop significantly, leading to the sensors going offline repeatedly. This was particularly frustrating as the sensors are crucial for monitoring my outdoor spaces.
Battery Voltage Monitoring
To better understand the issue, I started monitoring the battery voltage of my sensors. Initially, the voltage was stable at 100%, but within a week of sub-zero temperatures, it dropped to around 80%. By the end of the second week, it was down to 78%, which is below the operational threshold for these sensors.
Experiment with AA Batteries
In an attempt to address this issue, I decided to modify the power source. I replaced the CR2450 battery with a pair of AA batteries (3V total). This modification involved soldering the AA battery holder to the sensor’s circuit board and placing everything back into a protective plastic box. The results were promising: the battery voltage remained stable at 100% for a much longer period compared to the CR2450 batteries.
Next Steps
Encouraged by this improvement, I plan to test lithium AA batteries next, as they offer better performance in cold conditions. I also believe this modification could benefit the Sonoff SNZB-03 motion sensor, extending its outdoor usability.
