Optimizing Energy Consumption with Smart Home Tech

Recently, I’ve been diving into the world of home automation to better manage my energy usage, especially with the rising electricity costs. It’s been a fascinating journey filled with learning and experimentation. I’d love to share some of my experiences and insights with you all.

One of the first steps I took was addressing standby power consumption. After doing some research, I came across the INNR zigbee plugs, which are fantastic for devices that aren’t in constant use. I’ve been using them to power off devices like my old iMac and some gaming consoles when they’re not in use. It’s amazing how much power they save—just 0.2W per hour! This small change alone has made a noticeable difference in my energy bills.

Another area I’ve been focusing on is optimizing my media setup. I migrated my Plex server from an older setup to a more energy-efficient configuration. By switching to an M1 Mac mini and consolidating my storage, I’ve managed to reduce my daily energy consumption from 3.5kW to around 1.5kW. While I’m still fine-tuning things, the potential savings are exciting—over £120 a year on my current tariff!

Looking ahead, I’m really interested in exploring renewable energy solutions. In my next home, I plan to install a whole-house battery system and possibly solar panels. It’s a big investment, but the long-term savings and environmental benefits make it worthwhile.

Now, I’m curious to know how others are tackling energy management in their smart homes. Have you found any apps or tools within Hubitat that help track and reduce energy usage? I’d love to hear about your strategies and any tips you might have!

This community has been invaluable in my journey, and I’m grateful for all the shared knowledge and experiences. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other make our homes smarter and more energy-efficient!

Cheers,
