I’ve been really excited about how smart lighting can help optimize energy use in my home, and I wanted to share my experience and some tips for others looking to do the same. 
After setting up my Govee light strips and integrating them with Home Assistant, I decided to take it a step further by automating their usage based on motion sensors and time of day. The goal was to reduce energy waste while still maintaining comfort and convenience.
Here’s what I did:

Motion Sensor Integration: I installed motion sensors in key areas like the living room and hallway. These sensors trigger the lights to turn on when someone enters the room and automatically dim after a period of inactivity. This has significantly reduced the number of times I leave lights on by accident!

Time-Based Scheduling: I set up routines so that the lights dim to a lower brightness during the early morning and late evening when we’re typically asleep or not using the spaces. This small change has made a noticeable difference in my energy bills.

Task Automation: I created a daily task to check the status of all lights and send me a notification if any are left on unnecessarily. This has helped me be more mindful of my energy usage.

Scene Creation: I’ve also created different lighting scenes for various activities—like a relaxing dim setting for movie nights and a brighter setting for cleaning or reading. This adds a nice touch of customization to my smart home setup.
The results have been fantastic! My energy consumption has decreased, and I love the convenience of not having to manually adjust the lights. Plus, it’s been a fun project to work on and experiment with different configurations.
