I’ve been diving into the world of Home Assistant lately, and it’s been an incredible journey!
After switching from Domoticz, I’ve noticed some significant improvements, especially with the addition of areas and persons. However, there’s been one challenge that’s been keeping me up at night—getting my devices to work seamlessly across multiple areas.
Initially, I thought I could only assign one area per device, which was frustrating because my living space is quite open. Imagine having a large living area that combines the traditional living room, dining room, kitchen, and a cozy reading nook. I wanted each of these spaces to be their own area but also part of a larger combined area. Turns out, there’s a way to achieve this by nesting areas within each other! ![]()
But the real fun began when I started integrating my Shelly Dimmer 3 with a traditional motion sensor. The goal was simple—have the lights turn on when motion is detected and off when it stops. However, the dimmer wouldn’t stay off after the motion stopped. After some troubleshooting, I realized the issue was with how the input was configured. Setting the input to “detached” fixed the problem, but then the lights wouldn’t turn on at all. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but eventually, I found the perfect balance by adjusting the timer settings and ensuring the status updates were correctly reflected in Home Assistant. ![]()
Another hurdle I faced was with my Google Translate integration. After a few hours of smooth operation, I noticed that voice commands to my Google Home started failing with connection errors. It turned out to be a DNS issue related to PiHole. Clearing the DNS cache and ensuring PiHole was correctly configured resolved the problem, and now everything works like a charm! ![]()
If you’re looking to enhance your Home Assistant setup, I highly recommend exploring the area nesting feature and double-checking your device configurations, especially when integrating with traditional sensors. A little trial and error can go a long way in creating a truly smart home environment. Happy automating! ![]()
