I’ve been using Wyze cameras for quite some time now, primarily as a baby monitor. The ability to save footage locally on an SD card has been incredibly handy, especially for compiling those late-night feeds. However, I’ve noticed a significant increase in file sizes over time, which has made local storage less feasible than before. A minute of footage now goes from 5MB to up to 9MB, doubling the storage requirements. This change has made it challenging to keep a week’s worth of footage on my SD card, as it now occupies the space that used to hold a full week’s data.
While the improved video quality is a welcome addition, the lack of settings to adjust the bitrate or file size options is a bit frustrating. Currently, I manually compile these files to create daily clips, but this process is time-consuming. I’d love to see some flexibility in how the footage is saved, perhaps with options to adjust the bitrate or automatically merge files without additional steps.
Another minor inconvenience is the absence of a utility that can merge these files automatically. Manually handling each clip is tedious, and it would be ideal if the app could streamline this process. For now, I’m exploring the possibility of lowering the bitrate post-recording, but it’s not an ideal solution.
In terms of usage, the cameras have been reliable, and the video quality improvement is noticeable. However, the increased file size is making local storage less practical, especially for longer periods. I’m hopeful that future updates will address these concerns and offer more control over how footage is saved and managed.
