Optimizing My Mobile Smart Home Setup

I’ve been tinkering with my smart home setup in my Wohnmobil for a while now, and I wanted to share my journey and some questions I’ve come across. Let me start by giving you a quick overview of my current setup:

  • Raspberry Pi 4 running Home Assistant
  • FritzBox LTE 6890 with a Vodafone data card
  • Aquara Hub with various sensors
  • Shelly Switches and Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB

So far, everything works like a charm, but I’m looking to make a few tweaks to make things more efficient, especially when the Wohnmobil isn’t in use. Here’s what I’m aiming to achieve:

  1. Remote Access Without Being Connected to the Local Network
Currently, I can only access HA data when I’m on the FritzBox’s Wi-Fi. I’d love to have the ability to check my sensors or adjust settings from anywhere, using my phone or laptop.

  2. Reducing Energy Consumption When the Wohnmobil is Idle
Right now, my setup uses about 20W, which adds up over time. With other electronics on board, I’m looking to cut down on power usage to reduce the strain on my LiFePo batteries during the winter months.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Replacing the FritzBox with a smaller, more energy-efficient LTE device for data-only usage when the Wohnmobil is in use.
  • Setting up a separate HA-managed Wi-Fi network to keep my Shelly devices connected without relying on the main system.
  • Finding an LTE provider that offers a static IP for reliable external access to HA.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s tackled similar challenges or has tips on optimizing energy use in a mobile setup. Have you managed to achieve something similar? What devices or services did you find worked best? I’m all ears for suggestions or success stories!

Cheers,
Marc
