Recently, I’ve been diving deep into optimizing my smart home setup using Home Assistant (HA). It’s been a fascinating journey, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and insights with the community.
One of the biggest challenges I faced initially was the slow UI feedback when toggling devices. I’ve been using Apple Home for years, and while it’s sleek, HA offers so much more in terms of integrations and automations. To bridge this gap, I decided to take matters into my own hands and developed two plugins that have made a significant difference:
-
Optimistic Feedback: This plugin provides instant visual feedback when toggling devices, making the interface feel snappy and responsive, just like the best native mobile apps. It updates the UI immediately and then reconciles with the actual state, ensuring a smooth user experience without compromising accuracy.
-
Apple Home Dashboard: Inspired by Apple’s clean and intuitive design, this plugin offers a pixel-perfect replica of the Apple Home dashboard within HA. It supports drag-and-drop ordering, per-tile settings, sections, favorites, and quick actions, making it a breeze to customize your smart home view.
These plugins have truly elevated my HA experience, making it both powerful and polished. I’d love to hear from others who have tried similar solutions or have feedback on how to improve these plugins further.
Another area I’ve been exploring is automations. For instance, I’ve set up a system where my lights fade on when I press a button, creating a smooth transition that enhances the ambiance of my home. However, I’ve encountered some quirks with ramp rates and fade settings, which I’m still tweaking to get just right.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to incorporate more devices into my setup, particularly those that support multi-state functionality. I’ve been eyeing the ability to schedule different states for my curtains, such as open, closed, daytime, and evening, all within a single helper. This would streamline my morning routine and add a layer of sophistication to my smart home.
If anyone has tips on optimizing automations or suggestions for integrating new devices, I’d be thrilled to hear them. The community here is invaluable, and I’m eager to contribute and learn alongside you all!
Cheers to making our homes smarter and more enjoyable every day! ![]()
