Optimizing Oil Boiler Efficiency with Home Assistant

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my recent project where I used Home Assistant to optimize my oil boiler’s efficiency. It’s been a journey, but I’m thrilled with the results!

The Problem:
My oil boiler heats my home and water tank, but it was inefficient. The boiler relied on an internal thermostat, causing it to run even after reaching the desired temperature. This wasteful cycle was costing me money and oil.

The Solution:
I added a temperature sensor to the hot water tank and configured a cutoff relay using Home Assistant. Now, when the water reaches the correct temperature, Home Assistant triggers the cutoff relay, shutting down the boiler. This simple change has already paid for itself in just one week!

Future Plans:
I’m planning to enhance my heating system further. I want to add two more relays to each heating channel and keep the programmer set to ‘on’ at all times. This way, Home Assistant can fully control the heating. If anything goes wrong, I can easily switch back to the old system.

Questions:
Before diving deeper, I’d love your advice. Did I miss anything important? Are there any potential pitfalls I should be aware of?

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your insights!

Best regards,
