I wanted to share my journey in enhancing the reliability of my presence sensors, a topic that I’m sure many of you can relate to. After migrating from mobile-based presence to presence sensors, I noticed a slight delay in detection, which occasionally led to unexpected activations of my security lights. This got me thinking—how can we ensure these sensors are as reliable as possible?First, I considered the placement of my hub. Initially, I had it positioned towards the front of my house to improve range for front-door sensors. However, this seemed to affect the performance of my zwave sensors located at the back. Moving the hub to a central location helped balance the coverage, but the delay issue persisted.I then looked into the polling interval of the presence sensors. From what I understand, these sensors typically have a 30-second polling cycle, which might explain the delay. To address this, I explored adjusting the polling settings within my system. While I couldn’t change the interval directly, I found that creating a more responsive automation rule helped mitigate the issue.Another aspect I considered was the integration of door sensors. I have a smartsense door sensor on my front door, which I hoped could extend the range of my presence sensors. However, since these sensors operate on battery power, their range is somewhat limited. To overcome this, I ensured that the hub was placed in a central location to maximize coverage.I also reached out to the community for advice. Many users suggested optimizing the firmware and ensuring all devices were up to date. After performing a firmware update on my presence sensors, I noticed a slight improvement in responsiveness.In summary, while the delay issue isn’t completely resolved, these adjustments have made my system more reliable. I’m still experimenting with different configurations and would love to hear your tips and tricks for optimizing presence sensors.
